Read William's description of life in the army and then watch the video to the right of Ranger Pete explaining life in a Civil War army. Would you have wanted to be a soldier during the Civil War?
William's Memoir:
You used your fingers to eat with, for knife and fork were not available here. A cup, if you had one, was dipped into so-called coffee. Black, greasy looking fluid, called coffee, was plentiful in buckets. Every allowance, however, should be made for this rough [food] and treatment. When you take into consideration the fact that from eight to ten thousand men were said to be fed in that way there every day for months during the early part of the war, it was understandable... In this place, long benches were stretched out in every direction for men to lay upon. No beds, or anything of the kind, were provided. |
