Edward Heinichen
Edward Heinichen was a German immigrant who moved to Fredericksburg before the Civil War. Though he had many different jobs, at the time of the war Edward was a merchant. Edward wrote about his memories of the war after it ended. This type of source is called a memoir.
When the war first broke out Edward noticed that most Confederate soldiers uniforms did not match and were not very useful. Eventually, the armies tried to have matching uniforms, but this was often very hard. Scroll down to see some examples of different Confederate uniforms.

Photo Wall: Confederate Soldiers
Edwards talks about the variety of uniforms worn by Confederate soldiers. Unlike our military today, the Confederate Army did not provide a standard uniform or set of supplies for all of its soldiers. Instead, individual units often planned their own unique uniforms. Early in the war especially, soldiers brought their own supplies - including weapons - from home. Below are some examples. As you look through, note the variety of uniforms as well as accessories they feature.
